We spotted 2 of them and they are completely adorable.

We just popped outside to give Leila her last dose of medicine and Christian noticed a little baby hoglet inside her nest! He quickly covered the nest back up to not disturb.

The following photo of Leila was taken on the first day we got her from the SPCA. She was treated and released, but recently came back to our garden needing treatment for a bad case of lung worm. We have been treating her and she was just about to be released again when we discovered the little surprise. Can't wait to meet them.

Note - If you ever come across a nest of hoglets, it is best to leave them be, otherwise you might scare the mother away and the hoglets would not survive.

We just found her after hearing loud hog cough sounds outside. She may have lung worm again and will likely need treatment before she goes back on her merry way. Please do not build your bonfire pile in advance. Instead build it on the day you intend to light it - checking thoroughly underneath it before you start you fire. The other option is if you have a pile all ready to go - shift it on the day you intend to set it alight. This gives any wildlife a chance not to be burnt alive. These injuries ARE avoidable & unfortunately piles of wood/shrubbery make for the perfect sleeping area for a hedgehog. *Message from Hedgehog Rescue NZ*.

It's spring and everyone is filling up their pools. Please make sure there is an easy escape route for hedgehogs and other wild animals that may fall in. Although hedgehogs can swim they tire easily & then drown. All it takes is some stones, stacked bricks, a short plank of wood, a ramp etc. Often they end up in the water in the first place because they are thirsty, so you can help them by leaving shallow bowls of water around your property as well. Even if your pond/pool is EMPTY please make sure there is a way 'out'. Hedgehog Rescue NZ.

He will be ready for release very soon. The vet recently x-rayed his back legs after he took on a very strange walk (all OK thankfully) and was able to identify that he is an old man!. So happy he will have another shot out in the wild to complete his bucket list. Going to miss our grumpy old man.

Birthday prickles with my man Cedric McD. Something strange has been going on with his back legs, which has us really worried. He drags them along as he walks. The vet is not sure what it is, but for my birthday he decided to walk more normally again. Yey! Pray it stays this way so we can release him back into the wilderness soon ♡

In our complete ignorance of hedgehog gendering, we originally thought he was a boy, then changed our minds and settled on him being a female, only to find him becoming overly friendly with his blanket, then his hot water bottle, and then everything else! When we finally realised he most definitely is a boy (and that it was not a 5th leg we were seeing!). We now bestow Cedric McDiggery with the nickname 'Mr Humper-Pants'. His behaviour is a great sign that he is well on his road to recovery.

Introducing our newest addition to the McDiggery Clan - Cedric McDiggery. Please don't be disturbed by how he looks now, because he will be as good as new with handsome new quills growing back in no time. He is almost completely naked today. He has a bad case of mange (contracted from pet cats and dogs) and it sounds like he may also have lung worm. Good news is that both are entirely treatable. Keep posted to watch the transformation.

Cedric was rescued by the lovely Lilli from Sandringham who contacted Hedgehog Rescue New Zealand and they placed him in our foster care. If you come across a hedgehog like this that has a very strong unpleasant smell it is likely to have mange and Hedgehog Rescue New Zealand can give you some helpful advice on saving these beautiful beings from literally being eaten alive.

This is baby Leila when we first collected her from NZ Bird Rescue. She was found by the SPCA earlier that day on the roadside being pecked at by magpies. No wonder she was very shy. Poor little baby. She was grateful for the security and warmth of McDiggery Hospital. She recovered from mange and a parasite infestation, and then spent a lot of time in our outdoor enclosure 'Hoggiton' learning how to be a big hedgehog.

Leila's favourite position in the McDiggery hospital - warming her little tummy on the hot-water bottle. Leila's nose was her foods favourite position :)

Here is our beautiful healthy girl on her release day. We have opened the doors of Hoggiton. Bon Voyage. Keep safe out there little sweetheart.

Tonight we open the door at Hoggiton and give Leila-Hoggis McDiggery access to the big-wild world of Birkdale. We have had her since she was a baby, so it is tough letting go.

Leila is a little home-body and unlike her other clan members (Hedgepig McD) she didn't once try to escape from her outdoor enclosure, so I am sure she will hang around our garden and we will continue to leave food and water out for her.

Pinocchio McDiggery is the first boy of the McDiggery clan and had the longest, cutest nose we have seen. He was only with us a brief time before his little body gave way due to a host of illnesses (pneumonia, lung-worm, mange and a parasite infestation). We are so grateful to have shared our love and warmth in his final days. His beautiful little soul moved on to hoggie-heaven

Parasites are usually transmitted to hedgehogs from pet dogs and cats who have not had their worming treatments. Please make sure your pets are wormed to help prevent these little creatures from suffering needlessly.

Bath time is not all it is made out to be in popular media (see left). This is the real deal. Unscripted, uncut. No make up artists or special effects. You will not find a single bubble or pair of sunglasses in sight.

Hedgehogs do not usually need to be bathed, but for 'personal reasons', Leila needed a little rinse this day.

Howdy folks, I am Maggie-May McDiggery and I was found laying out in the sun on Christmas day. Luckily our rescuer knew that it is not usual behaviour for us hedgehogs to sunbathe during the day, we are usually snuggled up tight in a dark burrow. After she called the NZ Hedgehog Rescue I was placed in the McDiggery hospital and helped on the road to recovery. After a course of antibiotics and parasite treatment, and numerous escape attempts from hospital care, I am now happily zooming around in the wilderness of Herald Island.
